A common mistake I see many of the beginners who start with Watercolors do is not using artist grade watercolors. Many people keep asking me in my workshops or Instagram Live sessions if they can start with any non professional or non artist grade colors. Here is why you should NOT DO THAT AT ALL. The problem is, if you use some other student grade watercolor to begin with, then you will NOT get good results no matter how good you paint. Instead you can go for a low cost, affordable set of Watercolors to start with as a beginner, but make sure that you are using ARTIST GRADE Watercolors only. They can be either tubes or pans, that doesn't make much of a difference but it MUST BE ARTIST GRADE. How to check if the colors are artist grade Watercolors? Don't worry much about it. You just need to check if it is mentioned on the pack of those colors that they are artist grade watercolors. That's it. Sounds easy right ? Yes it is ! So, now that you know what you should mainl
If you wish to start with your own creative page on Instagram or have just started your page but are confused on how to go about it, then you must read till the end to get all your basics clear !
I won't take much of your time and will try to stick to the point and keep this short !
For those of you, who haven't yet made their page/account on Instagram but wish to do it, GO DO IT NOW !
I am saying this because you need to take the first step and avoid procrastinating on this.
Now what to do before you start your creative page !?
1. DECIDE YOUR NICHE
By this I mean, select a particular topic which interests you more or a particular talent that you are best in which you would like to show everyone or which will inspire everyone in some way. This can be anything like painting, pencil sketching, photography, dance, etc. but try to keep it specific. Even if it is a large topic, try to find out your specialized niche in that. Ok let me elaborate on this in the next point.
2. STICK TO YOUR TOPIC
It's natural for many of us to feel like trying various different things and putting them out as we try them, but this might affect your audience. Your audience or your followers are there for the specific type of content that you create. So decide on a particular topic and stick to that. For eg. if you are a Dancer, decide what type of dancing style do you do the best and try to create more content with similar style. If you are an artist then decide on 1 or 2 mediums you are best in and try to put content mainly related to that. For eg. it can be watercolors and acrylics or just one single medium. Remember not to deviate too much from your content.
3. USER NAME
Ok, so after you have decided your type of content, you can go ahead and make your page on Instagram. You must decide a user name which gives the idea of the type of content that you are putting up. The user name can contain your name, your brand name, the name of the type of content you are putting up or it can be a mixture of all of these. People will remember you and search you by this name itself. Also make sure that your username contains the key words to your content. For eg. if your page is about Painting, include some words like painting or art in your user name. So, take some time to think about it and decide on a good name !
4. FILL UP YOUR BIO
Now the bio is some space you get to write more about your page. Here you can write in short about what is your page about, or why people should follow you. You can also write your achievements or profession or any other details you want new people to know about you in this part.
5. UPLOAD A PROFILE PHOTO
Make sure that your photo fits right in a circular shape since that's how it will look on your profile, in a circular frame. You can upload your own photo or your brand logo in this part. Remember that on Instagram people cannot zoom into or open your profile photo by tapping it. So it's going to be relatively quiet smaller in size on your screen. So make sure that the photo itself is recognisable even in that smaller size.
6. PUT UP YOUR WEBSITE LINK
This is not a must thing to do. You can add up the link of your website or blog in the Website section if you have any. If you don't have it then just leave it blank.
7. POST REGULARLY
Once you are done with filling up all your details, your profile is completed and you can start posting ! Remember a key to growing on Instagram is via posting regularly. You can decide and time out your posts regularly and keep posting on a set time everyday. You can post anywhere from 1 to 4 posts for a good engagement daily. I personally try to put up atleast 1 post or reel everyday. (I am not amongst the once posting 3-4 things daily) Again I feel that you should not post more than 4 posts per day. It might get annoying for some people and you might lose some of your followers because of this. So remember to not over do it.
8. FEED AESTHETICS
Again this is not a must do thing, but who doesn't love to watch an aesthetic feed ??!! Once you are ready with your posts, you can just choose a color scheme or a similar background on all your posts to maintain a good pleasing feed. You can also add your logo or brand name on all the posts if you want. Again this is not a must thing to do. Just a small bonus. (I love scrolling through aesthetic feeds !!)
9. GOOD POSTS
Remember to click or shoot your content in good light ! This will immediately improve the quality of your content. Try to make content which makes you happy so that you won't feel burdened while creating it. Remember you are doing this for you first soo you should be very happy with it. Then only other people will like your work.
10. POSTING TIPS
Be regular and consistent. Write some catchy captions or ask a question in the caption related to your post. Use #tags related to your post. Give credits if the work is not yours but you have taken inspiration from someone.
# BONUS TIP
Don't over do your Instagram activity. If you follow too many people or unfollow too many people at a time, your Instagram account might get blocked for a certain duration. Also, don't like too many posts at a time or don't post too many posts in a day since Instagram may consider it as a spam account and restrict your activity. If you get restricted by Instagram once, stop doing any of these that you are doing. Then you account will return back to normal. But if you keep on doing it, then your account might get blocked for a longer period or might even be deleted in severe cases.
So, these are a few basics with which you can start your page. If you want to know more about how to grow on Instagram as an artist then just drop in a comment and I will write a short blog on that too. Feel free to reach out to me on my Instagram account Arty Vibes by Sanika for any questions.
